Dry January - Tried & True Zero Proof

Updated: 2 days ago

There are plenty of reasons that people choose to lay off alcohol, either temporarily or long-term. There are the classics, like Dry January and Sober October. Maybe you're on a health kick. Or maybe you've decided to cool it for a while due to what shall henceforth only be referred to as "the wedding incident." Regardless of the circumstance, just because you're not drinking booze doesn't mean you're fine sipping water all night.

Ordering an N/A cocktail at a bar often leads to the barkeep grabbing some ginger beer and mint and calling it a day. But fortunately, it's becoming more common for bars to offer zero-proof sections on their menus - making it easier than ever to go out on the town and enjoy more inspired offerings. So... about 1,000% better than a Shirley Temple.

After a year of sobriety from May 2023-May 2024, whereas we'll refer to my reasoning as the "flying internationally from Spain with a world class 36-hour hangover" I'm complling a list of my favorite zero proof bevvies so you can still 'participate' by tricking your brain that you're keeping up with your heaviest drinker friends while gettng zero hangover the next day.

  1. Aperol Spritz by Lyers - my friends and I all drank this on the Fourth and it tasted EXACTLY like the real deal.

  2. Dealcoholized Pinot Nior - the trick is to get DEALCOHOLIZED wine where they pull the alcohol out of the wine, rather than zero proof wine (which is essentially just grape juice). The one linked is my favorite.

  3. Lyers Gin & Tonic Cans - My favorite cocktail to sip also coincidentally gives me the worst hangovers. I'm a gin girl (watch out for us) but this allows me to not give up the taste, only the hangover.

  4. Recess Zero Proof Canned Mocktails - this brand has the best Paloma and Margarita imo, but even good to have in the fridge for those nights you get back to the house from a boozy night out and feel like you want a 'nightcap' (love this pack for the summer time).

Unfortunately, I haven't found a good whiskey (sorry, y'all) but open to suggestions if anyone has tried a good one, but this should be enough to get you started for a healthier, happier (bc hangover free) 2025!

Cheers, and please enjoy a photo from NYE 2024 at Wynn Las Vegas (and also my last glass of champagne for the near future)... insert N/A champagne emoji, so, sparkling cider :)
